SJU Stumbles Against Gustavus, Faces St. Olaf in Rematch of Opener

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's baseball fell to Gustavus Adolphus in a winners' bracket game, 9-5, on Friday, May 10, at CHS Field in St. Paul.

SJU (29-12, 13-7 MIAC) plays St. Olaf (27-14, 13-7 MIAC) in an elimination game, a rematch of Friday's tournament opener (an SJU 6-3 win) later this evening. The Oles scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and seven total over the final three innings, to earn the 10-9 walk-off win over Saint Mary's.

The Gusties (25-11, 14-6 MIAC) started the bottom of the third inning with three straight singles to load the bases and built a 3-0 lead on a sacrifice fly, RBI single and an SJU throwing error.

The Johnnies tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to RBI singles from senior outfielders Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), and a throwing error.

Gustavus, however, answered right back with four runs, including three with two outs, to gain a 7-3 lead in the bottom half of the fifth. GAC coaxed back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the sixth and plated two more runs to make it 9-3 following a sac bunt and a seeing-eye single.

Wingerd came through with a two-out, RBI single in the top of the seventh and SJU added another run thanks to a fielding error in the next at-bat.

The Johnnies threatened with two on and one out in the top of the eighth but did not score. SJU left 10 men on base in the loss.

Senior Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) fell to 6-2 on the year with the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 4.1 innings.

Freshman Nathan Brandecker (South St. Paul, Minn.) and junior Stanley Ridgeway (Litchfield, Minn.) each recorded a 1-2-3 inning of relief.

Junior designated hitter Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) went 0-for-3 with two walks, one intentional, which ended his 13-game hit streak. He batted .512 (22-for-43) with a 1.876 OPS, 10 home runs and 28 RBI during the streak.
