No. 30 Saint John's hosts a full weekend of baseball, beginning with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, April 6, against Carleton. The Johnnies then welcome St. Scholastica for a 1 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday, April 7. – Live Stats/Live Video

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's (18-5, 3-1 MIAC) swept Concordia-Moorhead with a pair of one-run wins, 1-0 and 6-5, on Thursday (April 4) in Collegeville. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Wednesday at Concordia, but was moved to Thursday at Becker Park due to unplayable field conditions in Moorhead. The Cobbers were the "home" team in both games. Senior first baseman Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) spoiled Ty Syverson's perfect game for CC with a one-out home run, the first of his collegiate career, in the top of the fifth inning. Senior pitcher Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) took care of the rest, as the Cobbers reached second base only once in the game (on a two-base throwing error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning).

Game two was a one-run game of a different sort. SJU broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, but CC answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning and tied it with an unearned run in the sixth. Junior right fielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) tripled with one out in the top of the seventh, his fourth three-bagger of the year, and crossed the plate on an RBI bunt single from senior center fielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) for what proved to be the game-winning run.

IN THE ZONE: Dickmeyer only needed one run from his offense to seal the win over Concordia Thursday and earn his third complete-game shutout of the season. He is now 4-1 with a 0.66 ERA, .171 opponent batting average and 32 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched this season. The performance enabled Dickmeyer climb in a number categories in SJU's record book: fifth in both innings pitched (189.1) and wins (17), and 10th in strikeouts (120).

CLOSING IN ON 100: Senior left fielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and junior third baseman Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) are racing to become the 30th and 31st Johnnies to reach 100 career hits. Both players recorded a hit Thursday in game two against Concordia, raising their career totals to 98 (Wingerd) and 92 (Schramel). The two look to join Jackson (179) and Ulrich (142), who both reached the milestone last season.

NO. 1 IN THE BOOKS: Jackson broke two SJU records Thursday by starting the game and stepping up to the plate. He now holds the records for most games played (148) and at-bats (539) in a Johnnie uniform. Here are the other records he is close to breaking:

-5: He needs five stolen bases to break the school record (47) held by Chris Palmer '96.
-6: He needs six runs scored to break the school record (123) held by Aaron Pfaff '15.
-6: He needs six hits to break the school record (186) held by Jed Riegelman '04.

IN THE MIAC: SJU is in the MIAC's top two statistically in batting average and ERA this season.

5. CAR, .290

1. SJU, 3.36
11. CAR, 7.79

A LOOK AT THE KNIGHTS: Carleton (3-9, 0-2 MIAC) dropped its MIAC-opening doubleheader to Saint Mary's, 3-2 and 3-1, on Wednesday (April 3) in Northfield. Freshman infielder Jacob Small leads Carleton's hitters with a .367 batting average and is tied for the team lead in RBI with 10, while his brother Josh Small, a junior infielder, leads the team in hits (16) and is third on the team with a .348 batting average. Senior Austin Heuer leads the Knights' pitching staff with 20.0 innings pitched and has a 1-1 record with a 4.50 ERA in three starts.

LAST SEASON: The Johnnies swept the Knights, 8-2 and 4-1, back on May 2 (2018) in Northfield. SJU batted .327 in the two games, while Dickmeyer and senior Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) each pitched a complete game.

Saint John's 8, Carleton 2
SJU scored six runs in the game's first three innings and all nine Johnnies in the lineup, except Ulrich, recorded a hit. Ulrich was hit by a pitch and recorded a sacrifice fly. Jeron Terres '18 made it 8-0 with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning. SJU saw its shutout streak of the Knights end at 21.1 innings (going back to 2016) when the home team scored two runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh. Kuhn improved to 6-0 on the year with the complete-game victory. He allowed two hits and struck out three in the first six innings.

Saint John's 4, Carleton 1
Like game one, SJU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Senior Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) roped a two-run double and Gruber followed three batters later with an RBI single. Meland came through with a two-out, RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 4-0. Meland led SJU with a 4-for-8 performance with four RBI on the day.

Dickmeyer retired the first 14 batters he faced until Carleton recorded its first hit with two outs in the fifth inning. The Knights found the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the sixth. Ulrich went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in game two.

SERIES HISTORY: SJU is 38-14 against Carleton since 1993, including an 18-6 record in Collegeville. The Johnnies have won each of the last five meetings overall and 14 of the last 17.

A LOOK AT THE SAINTS: St. Scholastica (7-8, 0-0 UMAC) walloped Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 17-8 and 17-10, on Wednesday (April 3) at Stevens Point, Wis. Junior outfielder Aaron Weber leads the team in batting average (.411), hits (23) and RBI (20), but the rest of the team is batting only .216 (87-for-402) at the plate. CSS opens conference play by hosting Martin Luther today (April 5) for a doubleheader.

A YEAR AGO: SJU cracked 23 hits, including eight doubles, in a 24-4 non-conference win over St. Scholastica last April 29 (2018) in Duluth. The Johnnies erased a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the top of the second inning and, after CSS cut into the Johnnies' lead with a single run in the third, scored 19 consecutive runs until the bottom of the ninth. The visitors scored six runs in the fifth inning and eight in the ninth. The Saints' lead was their first against SJU since 2004, a span of 27 innings.

Ulrich became the 29th Johnnie in school history to reach 100 career hits with a two-run double, his second of the game, in the ninth inning. He ended the afternoon 3-for-6 with the two doubles, four runs scored and a career-high five RBI. Dominick Schleper '18 went 5-for-5, SJU's first five-hit game since Aaron Pfaff '15 in 2015, with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

Every SJU starter in the lineup drove in at least one run in the game, yet the visitors still managed to leave 14 men on base. The Saints issued 17 free passes (15 walks, two hit batsmen) in the game. SJU used seven different pitchers in the win and awarded junior Taylor Fourre (Albany, Minn.) with the win. He allowed two hits in two scoreless innings (the fifth and sixth).

SERIES HISTORY: The Johnnies are 6-2 against St. Scholastica since 1993, with wins in each of the last four meetings overall and a 2-2 record in Collegeville.
