Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 20 Saint John's baseball earned a series win over Luther (Iowa) with a 2-1 victory on Sunday, March 24, in Collegeville.

Senior pitcher Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) recorded his third complete-game win in as many starts, allowing the lone run on seven hits in nine innings. He struck out three and did not issue a free pass, improving to 3-0 on the year. Dickmeyer recorded four three-up-three-down innings, totaling 22 pitches, as the game lasted only an hour and 47 minutes.

The Johnnies (15-4 overall) gained a quick 1-0 lead on an RBI single from junior designated hitter Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) in the bottom of the first inning. Junior right fielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) started the game with a single, stole second, advanced to third on an infield hit from senior center fielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and scored on Stock's 0-2 single through the left side.

Luther (6-9 overall) ended Dickmeyer's scoreless streak at 21.1 innings (26 innings going back to 2018) with a one-out RBI single, following a leadoff double, in the top of the fourth inning.

SJU manufactured the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Ulrich reached on a fielder's choice, the second out of the inning, and stole second base for the second time of the game. Jackson slapped a 2-1 pitch into the hole in the left side of the infield in the next at-bat. Shortstop Jake Halverson dove for the ball, but the ball skipped out of his glove into left field, which enabled Ulrich to score from second.

Senior left fielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) ended the game with a diving catch in the left-center gap. He closed the top half of the third inning with a similar catch down the left-field line and has now reached safely in all 19 games this season, thanks to a seventh-inning walk.

Jackson and Stock led SJU with two hits and an RBI each.

The Johnnies open conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 30, at Becker Park.
