SJU Hosts Itasca C.C. Saturday for Wrestling Home Opener

Saint John's wrestling returns to action with its home opener, a 1 p.m. dual against Itasca C.C., this Saturday, Dec. 21, in Sexton Arena. - Live Results | Live Video 

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's placed four wrestlers at MSU-Moorhead's Dragon Open back on Dec. 8. All but one of the Johnnies' matches were against NCAA Division II competition.

Freshman Dylan Hanson (Rogers, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) led SJU with a fourth-place finish at 149 pounds, after suffering a narrow 7-6 loss in the third-place match, while classmate Julian Mares (La Puente, Calif./Bishop Amat) and senior Dan Gehrz (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) each claimed fifth place at 157 and 184, respectively. 

Sophomore Jacob Scherber (Buffalo, Minn.) won his first two matches at 174 pounds before dropping a pair of major decisions and a 13-8 decision in the fifth-place bout.

SATURDAY'S LINEUP: The Johnnies are scheduled to send these nine wrestlers to the mat Saturday.

LAST YEAR'S DUAL: SJU took advantage of five forfeits in a 33-17 win over Itasca C.C. on Jan. 8 in Grand Rapids. The Johnnies opened the triangular with a 29-20 loss to NAIA Jamestown (N.D.). Scherber won the only non-forfeit match for SJU against the Vikings with an 11-5 decision at 174 pounds. The Johnnies dropped matches at 149 (pin), 157 (technical fall) and heavyweight (pin).
