SJU Settles for 3-3 Tie, Picks Up Extra Point With 3-on-3 Win

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey out-shot Hamline 51-21 on goal (80-39 overall) in a 3-3 tie on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

Similar to his 3-on-3 goal in SJU's 3-3 tie Nov. 9 at Bethel, junior defenseman Travis Brown (Otsego, Minn.) came through once again with a tally 15 seconds into the extra frame to give the Johnnies (2-3-4, 1-1-3 MIAC) the extra point in the conference standings. Junior forward Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.) won the faceoff at the left circle back to Brown, who ripped a shot to the top-right corner of the net. His goal Nov. 9 was a similar shot, on the power play, 12 seconds into the 3-on-3 period.

The Johnnies clawed back from a 3-1 first-period deficit with a pair of goals in the second period to force overtime, the team's third consecutive. SJU out-shot Hamline (2-8-3, 1-4-2 MIAC) by a 32-9 margin after the first period.

Sophomore forward Davis Kirkendall (Hamel, Minn.) cut the home team's deficit to 3-2 with his fifth goal of the season, and third in as many games, 2:06 into the second period. Senior forward Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) tied it at 3-3 when he chipped a loose puck in the blue paint to the back of the net with 7:16 left in the second.

Weiland Parrish gave the Pipers a 1-0 lead with a put-back of his initial shot and save 11:03 into the game. HU, however, was whistled for a penalty 24 seconds later and the Johnnies took advantage of the power-play opportunity when freshman forward Auggie Moore (Edina, Minn.) put away a nice one-timer from Heppner 22 seconds into the man advantage.

HU bounced back with a pair of goals 2:04 apart late in the first period, a wraparound tally from Jackson Bond at the 15:14 mark and Riley Meyer with 2:42 remaining, to gain a 3-1 lead.

With 51 shots on goal, SJU had plenty of other scoring chances in the contest. HU goaltender Sam Nelson denied the Johnnies on two breakaways (Heppner and Moore) in the first period and Kirkendall in the second. Senior captain Adam Orn (Ramsey, Minn.) hit the pipe during a second-period power play and freshman forward Jack Johnson (Bemidji, Minn.) blasted the iron with 6:10 remaining in the game.

Senior goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 18 saves in the tie.

The Johnnies play host to Concordia (Wis.) for a 2 p.m. matinee this Sunday, Dec. 15, at the HBNHC.
