MIAC Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Five Saint John's University student-athletes were named to the 2019 All-MIAC soccer team on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

Senior forward Kagan Foster (Alexandria, Minn.) and senior midfielder Leighton Lommel (Waite Park, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo) were named to the first team, while freshman defender Matt Anderson (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep), junior defender Joe Parise (Milwaukie, Ore./La Salle Prep) and junior midfielder Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) were honorable mention. Senior forward Nathan Stone (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship team.

In addition, SJU earned the MIAC's Sportsmanship Award (with Carleton) for totaling the fewest yellow cards in conference play (6).

The All-MIAC first-team honor is the second consecutive for Lommel, who recorded four points (1g/2a) in 10 conference games. The Johnnies' captain finished with six points (1g/4a) and was one of three Johnnies to start all 19 games this season.

Foster played nine of the 10 MIAC games and led SJU in all four offensive categories in conference play this fall: goals (7), assists (4), points (18) and shots (31). His totals for goals and points were good for third in the MIAC. Foster ended the season with a team-leading 26 points (11g/4a) in 18 games (13 starts). His 11 goals tied him for fifth-most in SJU single-season history and were the most since current Gustavus Adolphus head coach Tudor Flintham '06 and Tyler Kodet '09 each scored 11 in 2005.

Anderson started nine conference games as a freshman and scored three goals, including two game-winners, from his center-back position. His three goals and eight points (3g/2a) in 16 games overall ranked fourth on the team.

Wadsworth finished third on the team with seven points (2g/3a) in conference play. He tallied 13 points (4g/5a), including a team-high five assists, in 19 games to set career highs in all three categories.

Parise joined Wadsworth and Lommel in starting all 10 conference games, and recorded two assists on the season. Stone appeared in 16 games this fall and recorded five points (2g/1a).

SJU led or tied for the league lead in four statistical categories in MIAC play: first in both points (80) and shot percentage (.196), tied with St. Thomas for the most goals (27), and tied with Bethel and Carleton with the fewest yellow cards (6). The Johnnies also finished second in corner kicks (61).

The Johnnies finished fourth in the conference with a 6-4 record (10-8-1 overall) and advanced to the semifinals in their seventh MIAC-playoff appearance in the last eight seasons.
