Box Score
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - No. 8 Saint John's basketball saw its 12-game win streak end with a 66-63 loss at Carleton on Saturday, Jan. 19, in Northfield.
The Johnnies (13-2, 9-1 MIAC) entered the game leading NCAA Division III in three statistical categories - shooting percentage (.572), three-point percentage (.445) and rebound margin (+16.1 rpg.) - and were second in scoring margin (+24.4 ppg.). The visitors, however, shot a season-low 43.1 percent (22-for-51) from the field, 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from three-point range, 58.3 percent (14-for-24) from the free-throw line and were out-rebounded 37-36 (14-7 on the offensive glass) in what was their first game in a week.
Senior guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) brought the Johnnies to within two (65-63) on a driving layup with seven seconds remaining and he stole the in-bounds pass, but junior wing
Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) was called for traveling en route to the game-tying layup with three seconds left.
Division III's fifth-best three-point shooter at 53.5 percent (46-for-86), Stokman ended the afternoon an uncharacteristic 0-for-10 from behind the arc and 3-for-15 from the field. He finished with eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore wing
Oakley Baker (Geneva, Minn./New Richland-Heartland/Ellendale-Geneva) led SJU with 16 points. Sophomore post
Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Alade reached double figures with 10 points.
Junior post
Lucas Walford (Elko, Minn./New Prague) battled foul trouble and finished with two points and seven rebounds, going an atypical 0-for-6 from the free-throw line, in 19 minutes. He was whistled for two fouls in the game's first 5:16 and earned his third only 39 seconds into the second half.
Kent Hanson led all scorers with 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Knights (6-10, 4-7 MIAC), who trailed by as much as 13 three minutes into the second half.
Carleton turned a six-point deficit into a three-point lead (55-52), its first since 13 minutes were left in the first half, thanks to three consecutive three-pointers (one from Hanson and two from Matthew Stritzel) with 5:11 left. The Knights had made one of their 16 three-point attempts until that stretch. Stritzel made only four of his 19 shot attempts and finished with 16 points.
SJU is now 44-33 against Carleton since the 1964-65 season, including a 17-22 mark in Northfield. Saturday's win was the Knights' seventh in the last 10 meetings in West Gymnasium.
The Johnnies travel to No. 11 St. Thomas (14-1, 10-0 MIAC) for a 7 p.m. game on Monday, Jan. 21, in St. Paul.
