WINONA, Minn. – No. 28 Saint John's baseball extended its win streak to 10 games with a doubleheader sweep, 8-2 and 4-1, at Carleton on Wednesday, May 2, in Northfield.
The Johnnies (26-5, 11-3 MIAC) batted .357 (20-for-56) on the afternoon and picked up complete-game performances on the mound from juniors
Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) and
Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.).
Saint John's 8, Carleton 2
SJU scored six runs in the game's first three innings and all nine Johnnies in the lineup, except for sophomore outfielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls), recorded a hit. Ulrich was hit by a pitch and recorded a sacrifice fly.
Senior first baseman
Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) made it 8-0 with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning.
SJU saw its shutout streak of the Knights (7-20, 0-16 MIAC) end at 21.1 innings (going back to 2016) when the home team scored two runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh.
Kuhn improved to 6-0 on the year with the complete-game victory. He allowed two hits and struck out three in the first six innings.
Saint John's 4, Carleton 1
Like game one, SJU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Junior designated hitter
Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) roped a two-run double and sophomore shortstop
Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area) followed three batters later with an RBI single. Meland came through with a two-out, RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 4-0. Meland led SJU with a 4-for-8 performance with four RBI on the day.
Dickmeyer retired the first 14 batters he faced until Carleton recorded its first hit with two outs in the fifth inning. The Knights found the scoreboard with back-to-back doubles to start the bottom of the sixth.
Dickmeyer moved to 4-1 with the win, allowing the one run on four hits in seven innings. He struck out three and did not issue a free pass.
Ulrich went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in game two.
Senior catcher
Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) and junior centerfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) collected three hits apiece in the doubleheader. The three hits enabled Jackson to pass former assistant coach Chad Krueger '99 for seventh on SJU's all-time hits list with 145.
The Johnnies take on Saint Mary's (16-13, 10-4 MIAC) at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in Winona.
