Another Game-Two Walkoff, Another Sweep for SJU

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball ran its win streak to seven games with a doubleheader sweep of Augsburg, 6-1 and 2-1, on Friday, April 27, at Becker Park in Collegeville.

Junior Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) pitched a complete-game effort in game one, allowing an unearned run in the seventh inning for SJU (23-5, 9-3 MIAC). He scattered six hits, struck out five and did not issue a free pass.

Game two, like Wednesday's sweep of Concordia, resulted in a walk-off win for the Johnnies. Sophomore shortstop Michael Gruber (Glenwood, Minn./Minnewaska Area), the hero in Wednesday's walk-off win, walked on four pitches with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior second baseman Brennan Swan (Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace) ripped a 2-1 pitch to right field for a single, but the right-fielder's throw missed the cut-off and sailed wide of home plate, allowing Gruber to score from third.

Three SJU pitchers combined for a 0.64 ERA and held the Auggies (11-13, 3-7 MIAC) to a .138 (4-for-29) average with runners on base, including a 1-for-11 (.091) showing with runners in scoring position, on the day.

Junior designated hitter Thomas Meland (Northfield, Minn.) gave SJU an early 2-0 lead with his second home run of the season, and fourth of his career, in the first inning. Senior first baseman Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) made it 3-0 with an RBI groundout, his 30th RBI of the season, in the second inning.

The Johnnies tacked on two unearned runs with two outs in the fourth inning and gained a 6-0 lead with a single run in the fifth.

Sophomore third baseman Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) led the Johnnie bats with a 3-for-4 performance, including an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Saint John's 2, Augsburg 1
SJU manufactured a run in the second inning thanks to a leadoff single from Meland. He moved up to second on a groundout to third base and scored on Gruber's two-out single up the middle.

Augsburg recorded two outs at home plate in game two. The first was a beautiful relay from junior left-fielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), to Gruber, to senior catcher Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) to end the top of the third inning. The second was a botched suicide-squeeze bunt in the top of the fifth.

The Auggies broke through to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning when Clayton Bodine singled with two outs and Cam Erikson doubled in the ensuing at-bat.

Junior Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) allowed the lone run on seven hits in six innings of work for the no-decision. Senior Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win, the 14th of his career (14-3 record), and improve to 3-0 on the year.

Schramel ended the day 4-for-7, while Swan extended his hit streak to eight games with a 3-for-5 afternoon.

SJU is now 41-11 against Augsburg since 1993, including a 17-5 record in Collegeville. The Johnnies have won each of the last 13 meetings against the Auggies (16 of the last 17), though 10 of the 13 were decided by two runs or less (six by one run).

The Johnnies travel north to face St. Scholastica for a 9-inning, non-conference game at noon Sunday, April 29, in Duluth.
