Johnnie Baseball Picks Up Two More Wins in Florida

FT. MYERS, Fla. – Saint John's baseball recorded two more wins in a pair of nine-inning games against different opponents on Tuesday, March 6, in Ft. Myers, Fla.

SJU (4-0 overall) started the day with a narrow 2-1 win over Alvernia (Pa.) and followed that with a 13-1 victory over Pitt-Bradford.

Junior centerfielder Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a two-out, RBI single on a 2-2 count with the bases loaded.

Junior outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run, his second homer in as many days, in the sixth inning.

Junior Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) allowed the one run, a solo homer with two outs in the fourth, on five hits in seven innings of work. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Dickmeyer led all of NCAA Division III with zero walks issued in 64 innings last season.

Senior Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) struck out two in two innings of hitless relief to earn the win.

Alvernia (3-3 overall) posted a 30-15-2 record last season.

SJU received another strong outing from its starting pitcher, junior Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.), and the offense totaled 20 hits in the win.

Wiggins allowed the one run, a solo home run for the Panthers (4-1 overall) in the seventh inning, on five hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked one. Junior Alex Budde (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) allowed one hit in two innings of relief.

Wingerd went 4-for-5 with a triple, four runs scored and three RBI. Jackson and sophomore shortstop Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) each went 3-for-5 with three RBI in the game.

The Johnnies play a doubleheader against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.) at 9 a.m. EST on Wednesday, March 7.
