Johnnies Close Successful Tucson Trip With 16-7 Win

TUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball ended its four-day trip to Tucson with a 16-7 win over Buena Vista (Iowa) on Tuesday, March 20.

The Johnnies (14-2 overall) overcame an early 4-0 deficit with 13 runs in the first four innings and totaled 19 hits (a .452 average) in the victory.

Sophomore third baseman Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) led SJU with four hits (4-for-6), including a two-run double in the first inning, and scored three runs. Senior first baseman Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) and junior outfielder Jack Wingerd (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) followed with three hits apiece and senior catcher Dominick Schleper (Shakopee, Minn.) drove in four. Terres roped a pair of RBI doubles and Wingerd collected six total bases thanks to a double and triple. 

The Beavers (4-9 overall) tagged sophomore Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) with six runs, though two were earned, on seven hits in the first two innings.

Junior Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) pitched four innings of two-hit, scoreless relief to earn the win, which was his second of the season (2-0 record) and 10th of his career (10-2).

Junior Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) allowed one run in two innings and senior Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) sealed the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

SJU batted .425 (102-for-240) with 32 extra-base hits and out-scored its opponents 75-26 in the trip's seven games. Schramel recorded 10 hits in 17 at-bats (.588), while Wingerd batted .556 and led the team in hits (15), runs (14), extra-base hits (8), doubles (6) and triples (2) from the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

The Johnnies are scheduled to open conference play with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 30, in Winona.
