No. 14 Johnnies Lock Up Second Seed With 2-1 Win Over Gustavus

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 14 Saint John's hockey secured the second seed in next week's MIAC Playoffs with a 2-1 win over Gustavus Adolphus in the regular-season finale on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (HBNHC) in St. Cloud.

The Johnnies (16-7-2, 11-5-0 MIAC) will host third-seeded Augsburg (16-9-0, 10-6-0 MIAC) for an MIAC Playoff semifinal game at 2 p.m. next Saturday, Feb. 24, at the HBNHC. St. Thomas earned the top seed and the MIAC regular-season title with a 6-5 win tonight at Hamline, edging SJU by one point in the standings. The Tommies will host the winner of Thursday's (Feb. 22) MIAC quarterfinal game between Concordia-Moorhead and Gustavus in the other semifinal contest next Saturday.

Sophomore defenseman Cole Souto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) gave SJU a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal, his fourth tally of the season, 12:15 into the second period. Sophomore forward Kyle Wagner (St. Francis, Minn.) and junior forward Garrett Riebling (Chanhassen, Minn.) assisted on Souto's snipe from the point.

Junior forward Robb Stautz (Roseville, Minn.) made it 2-0 on an unassisted, empty-net goal with 1:17 to play. The goal was his eighth of the season and third in as many games.

Will LeNeave made things interesting for GAC (10-12-3, 9-7-0 MIAC) with an extra-attacker goal with 18 seconds remaining, not long after junior forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) hit the pipe on his long-range attempt at the open net.

Sophomore goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 28 saves to improve to 11-4-1 (8-3-0 MIAC) on the year. He ended the regular season as the MIAC leader in GAA (1.84), save percentage (.933) and winning percentage (.719).
