No. 19 Johnnies Close 2018 With 94-53 Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 19 Saint John's basketball returned to action in full form with a 94-53 non-conference win over Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, Dec. 29, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (8-1, 4-0 MIAC) shot 57.6 percent (38-for-66) from the field and out-scored the Yellowjackets (2-10, 1-3 UMAC) 52-18 in the paint. The home team also posted a 40-28 advantage on the glass and turned the 11 offensive rebounds into 18 second-chance points.

All 16 Johnnies played at least three minutes in the victory, which was SJU's first game since Dec. 12 (an 87-70 win at Saint Mary's). 

SJU broke open a four-point (19-15) game with a 19-2 run over a 4:55 span late in the first half. The Johnnies led by as much as 42 (75-33) with 12:52 remaining.

The Johnnies entered the contest leading NCAA Division III (through games of Dec. 22) in three-point percentage (.444), and were second in overall shooting percentage (.556) and third in rebound margin (+15.3 rpg.).

Junior wing Jubie Alade (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) led all scorers with 23 points, 21 of which came on 8 of 10 shooting (3-for-4 from three-point range) in 15 first-half minutes. His three-pointer in the final second of the first half gave SJU a 51-25 lead at the break. The 20-point game was the sixth of Alade's career.

Sophomore wing Oakley Baker (Geneva, Minn./New Richland-Heartland-Ellendale-Geneva) followed with 12 points and three assists, and sophomore post Zach Hanson (New Prague, Minn.) added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore post Kyle Sorenson (Caledonia, Minn.) chipped in 11 points and four rebounds in 12 minutes off the bench.

Montroy Scott led Superior, which shot 36.4 percent (20-for-55), with 22 points.

The Johnnies return to conference play with a 7 p.m. tip-off at Augsburg (7-2, 3-1 MIAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 2, in Minneapolis.
