MIAC Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior cornerback Sam Westby (Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray) was named the MIAC Football Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct. 8.

Westby came up with a key defensive play late in the Johnnies' 34-16 win last Saturday (Oct. 6) at Bethel. Down 20-16, the Royals had the ball on their own 32-yard line with five minutes to play. Westby, however, jumped a bubble-screen attempt on the drive's second play and returned the interception 34 yards for a touchdown to give the Johnnies a 27-16 cushion.

Westby totaled eight tackles (four solo) and broke up another pass in the win. He currently leads the team in interceptions (2) and pass breakups (6) this season.

No. 7/8 SJU (5-0, 4-0 MIAC) plays host to third-ranked St. Thomas (5-0, 3-0 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. game Saturday, Oct. 13, in Clemens Stadium.
