SJU Hockey Adds Local Exhibition Game Oct. 16

10/4/2018 12:12:00 PM

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University hockey and the NA3HL's Granite City Lumberjacks will play an exhibition game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Sports Arena East (located on the Benton County Fairgrounds) in Sauk Rapids.

Tickets are $5 for adults, students and senior citizens. Children ages six and under will be admitted for free.

SJU has three former Lumberjacks on the 2018-19 roster: sophomore goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.), and freshman forwards Braden Altena (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Brady Dahl (Rochester, Minn.). All three were teammates and members of Granite City's 2017 Fraser Cup championship team. Berglove was named the Fraser Cup's Most Valuable Player that season.

Berglove played 11 games, including nine starts, for the Johnnies as a freshman and went 5-3-1 with a 2.35 GAA and a .924 save percentage in 2017-18. He earned his first collegiate win and shutout in his SJU debut (Oct. 28, 2017 vs. Saint Mary's at the MIAC Showcase).

Altena recorded 163 points (63g/100a) in 150 games, including 28 points (11g/17a) in 23 postseason contests, over three seasons (2015-18) with the Lumberjacks. Dahl, meanwhile, totaled 55 points (23g/32a) in 93 games, including 14 points (9g/5a) in 18 postseason contests, over two seasons (2016-18).

Granite City reached the semifinals of the Fraser Cup, which is the playoff tournament for the winners of the eight playoff division champions in the NA3HL, last season. The Lumberjacks have eight players returning from last season's team.

The Johnnies finished second in the MIAC, one point from the regular-season championship, with an 11-5 conference record (16-8-2 overall) last season. The 11 conference wins were the most since the 2005-06 season for SJU, which earned its fifth trip to the MIAC Playoffs in the last seven years. The 11 game-winning goals in conference play were scored by 11 different Johnnies, nine of whom return in 2018-19.

SJU opens the 2018-19 season with a pair of non-conference games as part of the annual MIAC Showcase Oct. 26 (7 p.m. vs. St. Thomas) and Oct. 28 (3:30 p.m. vs. Bethel) at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.
