COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Concordia College in Moorhead became the latest team in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to honor the passing of retired Saint John's University football coach
John Gagliardi.
Cobbers' head coach Terry Horan told the
Fargo Forum newspaper that his team is going to wear memorial decals to honor Gagliardi, the legendary Saint John's head coach who passed away Oct. 7.
"They will be on every Cobbers helmet for the rest of the season," Horan told the Forum. The Johnnies' play at Concordia Oct. 27.
The Cobbers' sticker has the word "John" on the top, with the SJU logo beneath it.
Horan said this is the first time the Cobbers have honored an opponent with a decal in the 18 years he has been a head coach at Concordia.
"He (Gagliardi) meant the world to (Division III) football and our league," Horan told the Forum. "His teams definitely put our league on the map."Â
Both the Johnnies and the University of St. Thomas donned Gagliardi stickers before their rivalry game Oct. 13 in Collegeville. The SJU stickers have "John" on them, while the St. Thomas stickers feature the initials "JG."
A number of other schools in the MIAC have offered condolences on Gagliardi's passing via social media.
The Minnesota Vikings held a moment of silence to honor Gagliardi and Diane Page, the wife of Vikings' Hall of Famer Alan Page who passed away Sept. 29, before the start of their Oct. 14 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
