NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton edged Saint John's swimming and diving 154-126 in a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 20, in Northfield.
SJU recorded 24 top-three finishes, but Carleton won 11 of the 14 events.
Senior
Curtis Noecker (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.06) and sophomore
Luke Heller (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) followed in second (22.35). Heller also claimed second in the 100-yard freestyle (49.73).
Junior
Jacob Upton (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.87 and took second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.91).
Sophomore
Caleb Birklid (Anoka, Minn.) won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.50) and touched the wall second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.63) and 200-yard individual medley (2:05.42).
The Johnnies picked up second-place finishes from senior
Christian Cancino (1,650-yard freestyle; Flagstaff, Ariz.), senior
Miao He (100- and 200-yard butterfly; Beijing, China/Florida Air Academy) and freshman
Mick Olson (100-yard backstroke; Fullerton, Calif./Troy).
SJU finished second in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:29.71; Noecker,
Ryan Pauley,
Aidan Culloton, Heller) and 200-yard medley (1:40.32; Olson, Upton, Pauley, Heller) relays.
The Johnnies return to action with a split squad next Saturday, Jan. 27. The swimmers travel south to take Gustavus Adolphus for a 1 p.m. dual meet in St. Peter, while the divers host an invite at 1 p.m. in the Warner Palaestra Pool.
