SJU Clinches MIAC Playoff Berth With Sweep at Concordia

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Saint John's baseball ended the regular season with a doubleheader sweep, 6-0 and 6-4, at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, May 6.

The 6-0 shutout in game one clinched the eighth consecutive MIAC Playoff appearance for SJU (25-11, 14-6 MIAC), which opens the four-team, double-elimination tournament as the No. 3 seed against either Bethel or St. Thomas at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at Cold Spring Baseball Park in Cold Spring. If Bethel sweeps Saint Mary's on Sunday, May 7, it would tie with St. Thomas for the MIAC regular-season championship (16-4 conference record) and earn the tournament's top seed. The Royals hold the tie-breaker over the Tommies due to the third criteria (results against teams not in playoffs from highest finish to lowest finish, Concordia).

The pair of wins spoiled the Cobbers' senior day and dashed their postseason hopes. SJU needed only one win in the doubleheader to clinch a postseason berth, while CC (22-17, 11-9 MIAC) needed a sweep.

The game-one shutout was also SJU's first of CC since April 12, 1993, in Moorhead (8-0). The Johnnies have now won nine of the last 11 meetings against the Cobbers in Moorhead.

Freshman outfielder Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls) scored three runs and went 4-for-6 in the doubleheader, 3-for-4 in game one and 1-for-2 in the nightcap, to extend his hitting streak to 27 games. He is now batting .531 (60-for-113) this season.

Junior first baseman Jeron Terres (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) went 3-for-6 on the day with four RBI. He gave SJU first-inning leads in both games, thanks to a two-run single in game one and an RBI double in game two.

The Johnnies added to their 2-0 lead in game one with three runs in the third inning, thanks to a two-run double from senior outfielder Blake Langerud (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) and a sacrifice fly from Terres. Freshman shortstop Jack Schramel (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) ended the scoring with a sac fly in the sixth inning.

Sophomore Cameron Jurek (Foley, Minn.) allowed two hits and struck out three in five innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. Junior Ben Etzell (Greenbank, Wash./Coupeville) pitched two innings of scoreless relief to seal the win. He walked three and struck out three, including a pair of punchouts to end the game.

With the postseason fate set, 17 different Johnnies played in game two. SJU made it 2-0 with an unearned run in the second inning, but CC snapped its scoreless streak with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth and tied it with an RBI groundout in the seventh.

The Johnnies answered, however, with four unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning. The Cobbers tallied two unearned runs off junior Ted Christian (Le Center, Minn./Tri-City United) in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game.

Sophomore Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.) started game two and allowed one hit in three scoreless innings. Sophomore Tommy Auger (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) allowed a run on three hits in three innings of relief, while freshman Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) surrendered one run on one hit and struck out three to earn the win (2-1 record).

The Johnnies held Concordia to a .140 batting average (8-for-57) on the day. The Cobbers batted .087 (2-for-27) with runners on base, .056 (1-for-18) with runners in scoring position and 0-for-4 with the bases loaded.
