No. 11 Augsburg, Tough Luck Spoils SJU's Senior Night

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - No. 11 Augsburg scored three unanswered goals in the third period en route to a 5-1 win over Saint John's on Friday, Feb. 17, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

The loss, coupled with Concordia-Moorhead's 6-2 win at Bethel, eliminated SJU (11-10-3, 6-7-2 MIAC) from postseason contention.

The Johnnies out-shot the Auggies 38-30 (68-44 attempted) and hit the pipe four times, three clean and another that glanced off the goaltender's shoulder before meeting the crossbar, in the loss.

Sophomore forward Robb Stautz (Roseville, Minn.) cut the Johnnies' deficit to 2-1 with a power-play goal, his sixth tally of the season, 2:17 into the third period. The Auggies (15-3-6, 9-1-5 MIAC), however, answered with three consecutive goals.

Corbin Chapman made it a two-goal game 6:15 later and Luke Dietsch sealed the win with a power-play goal at the 14:37 mark. Down 4-1 and desperate, SJU pulled freshman goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) on the power play, but Eric Brenk scored an empty-netter with 1:29 remaining.

Following a scoreless first period in which SJU hit the pipe twice and out-shot the Auggies 15-8, Augsburg found the scoreboard 46 seconds into the frame and made it 2-0 on a power-play goal with 2:01 left. AUG went 2-for-2 on the power play, while SJU went 1-for-5 on the man advantage.

The Johnnies end their 2016-17 season with a 7:05 p.m. puck-drop against the Auggies on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
