Johnnies Lose Heartbreaker in Overtime, 3-2

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey suffered a gut-wrenching 3-2 overtime loss to Saint Mary's on Friday, Feb. 10, at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud.

With the goaltender pulled and an extra attacker on the ice, SJU (10-9-3, 5-6-2 MIAC) battled back to tie the game with 2:02 remaining in the game, but Kelvin Walz scored the game-winning goal 1:54 into overtime to clinch one of the five berths to the MIAC Playoffs for SMU (13-8-3, 9-5-1 MIAC).

SJU out-shot the Cardinals 46-32 in the game, including a 19-4 advantage in the third period alone.

Junior co-captain Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) slipped a rebound past the Cardinal goaltender to tie the game at 2-2. Freshman defenseman Cole Souto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) ripped the initial shot on goal to record the assist on what was Sekesi's fourth goal of the season. Sekesi now has eight points (4g/4a) in five career games against SMU. Souto currently leads all MIAC freshmen with an average of 0.89 points per game and is second overall with 16 points (4g/12a) in 18 games.

Sophomore forward Garrett Riebling (Chanhassen, Minn.) gave the Johnnies a 1-0 lead with a tough-angle shot, his third goal of the season, with 7:51 left in the first period. SMU answered with two goals in the second period.

Freshman goaltender Andrew Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.) made 29 saves in the loss, his first appearance in net since the 2-2 tie Jan. 14 vs. St. Olaf.

The Johnnies entered the game 12th out of 78 NCAA Division III teams on the power play at 23.8 percent (20-for-84), but went 0-for-5 on the night and are 1-for-16 in their last three games. SJU registered nine shots on goal during the five power plays, which only accrued 6:57.

The two teams wrap up the weekend series with a 7 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the MAC.
