SJU Gains Key MIAC Sweep With 4-1 Win at Saint Mary's

Box Score

WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's hockey completed a weekend sweep of Saint Mary's with a 4-1 win on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Winona.

SJU (8-2-2, 4-2-0 MIAC) killed off all nine SMU power plays Saturday to finish at a perfect 14-for-14 on the weekend. The Cardinals (3-8-1, 1-4-1 MIAC) are now 5-for-58 (8.6 percent) on the man advantage through 12 games this season.

Sophomore forward Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) broke a scoreless tie with his second goal of the weekend, and team-leading sixth of the season, 38 seconds into the second period.

Freshman forward Ryan Kero (Hermantown, Minn.), like Friday's 7-0 win, lit the lamp in the second period for his third tally of the year, which proved to be his first collegiate game-winner. He led SJU with four points (2g/2a) in the two games.

Luke Seper cut the Cardinals' deficit in half with 7:48 to play in the second period.

Junior defenseman Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.), like Heppner and Kero before him, tallied his second goal of the weekend 3:23 into the third period.

Senior forward Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) added another insurance goal, on the power play, with 12:01 remaining. The Johnnies carried over Friday's success (3-for-3) on the power play with a 1-for-4 showing Saturday afternoon.

Freshman goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 36 saves to earn his second win over SMU this season and improve to 4-1-1 on the year. He shut out the Cardinals with a 30-save effort earlier this season (Oct. 28) at the MIAC Showcase (1-0 win).

SJU is now 50-25-4 against Saint Mary's since the 1984-85 season, including a 9-1-0 record in Winona during head coach Doug Schueller's tenure (since 2008-09). The Johnnies are 18-4-0 against the Cardinals in the last 22 meetings at SMU Ice Arena (since 1997-98).

The Johnnies return home to host St. Scholastica for a 7 p.m. non-conference game on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
