Johnnies Show Improvement in Dual Loss

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's swimming and diving won three events and tallied 11 top-three finishes in a 170-69 dual loss to St. Thomas on Saturday, Nov. 18, in Collegeville.

Senior Curtis Noecker (St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) shaved half a second off his season-best time to win the 50-yard freestyle (22.10) and sophomore Caleb Birklid (Anoka, Minn.) cut over a second from his best time in the 200-yard freestyle to win the event (1:48.32).

Freshman Mitchell Dockendorf (St. Stephen, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) won the 100-yard backstroke (53.86) and placed second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.53). 

Sophomore Luke Heller (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and freshman Devin Murphy (Eden Prairie, Minn.) went 2 (49.33)-3 (49.96) in the 100-yard freestyle.

Senior Christian Cancino (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and freshman Mick Olson (Fullerton, Calif./Troy) claimed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:01.73) and 500-yard freestyle (5:11.77), respectively. Senior Tyler Urbanski (Lexington, Minn./Centennial) finished third in the 3-meter dive (193.55).

Both of SJU's relays, the 400-yard freestyle (Ryan Pauley, Birklid, Noecker, Murphy) and 400-yard medley (Dockendorf, Jacob Upton, Friedrich Odermann, Heller), finished third.

The Johnnies return to action on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the St. Thomas Invitational. Although the meet is a two-day event, SJU is expected to compete Saturday, with competition starting at 9 a.m. in St. Paul.
