BLAINE, Minn. – Saint John's freshman goaltender
Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 30 saves in his collegiate debut as the Johnnies earned a 1-0, non-conference shutout over Saint Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the MIAC Showcase in Blaine.
The shutout is the first for an SJU freshman goaltender since Saxton Soley '16 on Feb. 8, 2013 (30 saves in a 4-0 win at St. Olaf).
Senior forward
Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) gave SJU (2-0 overall) a 1-0 lead on a one-timer from junior forward
Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) on a 4-on-4 just 7:44 into the game. The assist was the 20th of Colford's career and his 30th career point. Freshman defenseman
Christian Canavati (Alexandria, Minn.) tallied the second assist.
Sekesi now has 11 points (6g/5a) in seven career games against Saint Mary's.
The Cardinals (0-1 overall) posted a 30-25 advantage in shots but were 0-for-4 on the power play. SJU hit the pipe three times on the night, twice in the first period and once in the second.
The Johnnies continue non-conference play with a pair of games in Wisconsin next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. tilt on Friday, Nov. 3, at Wisconsin-River Falls. SJU visits Wisconsin-Stout for a 7 p.m. contest on Saturday, Nov. 4.
