Johnnie Hockey Returns to the Win Column, 5-2

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey scored four consecutive goals in a 5-2 win over Bethel on Thursday, Jan. 19, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

Five Johnnies recorded multiple points in the win. Freshman defenseman Cole Souto (Yorba Linda, Calif.), who suited up for the first time since Dec. 10 due to illness, tallied a pair of goals for SJU (9-6-3, 4-3-2 MIAC). He is currently tied for first in the MIAC (all games) in power-play points (9) and leads all conference freshmen in points with 12 (4g/8a), which is also good for fourth among the league's defensemen.

Following a scoreless first period, Souto put SJU on the scoreboard 31 seconds into the second frame. Adam Marty tied the game for BU (1-13-2, 0-5-2 MIAC) less than two minutes later, but Souto tallied his fourth goal of the season, on the power play, 4:40 into the second.

Sophomore forward Evan Okeley (Carmel, Ind.) slipped a rebound to the back of the net off the initial save of freshman forward Brady Heppner's (Crookston, Minn.) shot to give SJU a 3-1 lead with 7:07 left in the second.

Sophomore forward Garrett Riebling (Chanhassen, Minn.) lit the lamp for the first time this season 10:56 into the third period and sophomore defenseman Rob Click (Stillwater, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal 1:22 later.

Tyler Mros ended the game's scoring with 1:57 remaining for BU.

The Johnnies out-shot the Royals 43-18, including a 21-6 margin in the second period, and have now out-scored BU 25-9 over the last four meetings.

Sophomore forward Mitch Fritz (St. Cloud, Minn.) registered an assist on each of the Johnnies' final two goals and now has seven points (3g/4a) in three career games against Bethel.

Senior goaltender Tyler Nelson (Champlin, Minn.) made 16 saves to improve to 6-4-1 (2-2-0 MIAC).

SJU travels to face the Royals for a 7 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.
