COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's basketball shot 76.9 percent (20-for-26) in the first half en route to a 94-74 win over Saint Mary's on Saturday, Jan. 14, in Sexton Arena.
SJU (10-3, 6-2 MIAC) finished at 62.7 percent (37-for-59) for the game and led by as much as 34 (80-46) with 9:13 remaining.
Junior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) led all scorers with 21 points, including 18 in the first half, in 23 minutes of play.
The Johnnies out-scored SMU 56-18 in the paint thanks to 31 field goals inside the arc. The Cardinals (5-7, 3-5 MIAC), meanwhile, put up 32 three-point attempts (40.6 percent, 13-for-32) and finished at 38.7 percent (24-for-62) from the floor. Over half of SMU's made field goals (13 of 24) were three-pointers.
Sophomore guard
David Stokman (Maple Lake, Minn.) poured in 15 points, while junior guard
Garrett Goetz (Rosemount, Minn.) added a career-high 12 with five assists. SJU's five starters combined to shoot 64.9 percent (24-for-37) from the field. All 14 Johnnies that played scored a point or more in the win.
SJU has now won 50 of its last 58 meetings with Saint Mary's, including each of the last 47 in Collegeville (43-0 in the Warner Palaestra/Sexton Arena).
The Johnnies play host to league-leading Bethel (11-2, 7-1 MIAC) for a 7 p.m. game on Monday, Jan. 16, in Collegeville.
