Late-Inning Heroics Send SJU to Saturday at NCAA Midwest Regional

Box Score

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Junior third baseman Derek Schiebel's bases-loaded, RBI single gave Saint John's a 5-4 win in 10 innings over No. 29 Luther (Iowa) in an elimination game at the NCAA Midwest Regional late Friday, May 20, in La Crosse, Wis.

SJU (31-13 overall) advances to play No. 13/18 Concordia-Chicago (34-12 overall) in another elimination game at noon on Saturday, May 21, at Copeland Park.

The Johnnies built a 4-1 lead but left 11 men on base through the first five innings (15 total for the game). Luther (34-14 overall) hit a pair of solo home runs, one in the fifth inning and another in the seventh, and strung together back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the top of the eighth to tie the game at 4-4.

Senior catcher Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) started the bottom of the 10th inning with a single and advanced to third base when freshman outfielder Max Jackson's (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) sacrifice-bunt attempt was thrown away by the pitcher. Freshman second baseman Cole Weaver (Carlsbad, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) was intentionally walked to load the bases before Schiebel roped a 2-1 pitch up the middle to plate the game-winning run with nobody out.

Schiebel led the SJU cause with a 4-for-6 showing at the plate, while Jackson, Weaver and senior shortstop Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) added two hits apiece. The four hits enabled Schiebel to move into a tie with Matt Butorac '11 for ninth in SJU history with 129 career hits.

Freshman Jake Dickmeyer (Woodbury, Minn.) stepped up big for SJU in his second start of the season, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out six and walked one in the no-decision.

Sophomore Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) lost the save opportunity but earned the win to improve to 8-1 on the year. He allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts in three innings of relief.
