A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's collected 12 top-10 marks/times, including a number of strong performances among NCAA Division III participants, at the (Division II) Concordia-St. Paul Invitational last Saturday (April 16).
Senior
Randy Perez (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) won the javelin throw with a facility- and meet-record distance of 51.75 meters. Senior
Cole Howard (Ridgefield, Wash./Skyview) finished seventh (45.82 meters). Senior
Thomas Feichtinger (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) led all non-Division I participants in the 800 meters to finish fifth overall with a time of 1:56.14.
Freshman
Drew Schoenbauer (New Prague, Minn.) took second among collegiate runners in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.94 seconds, the second-fastest in the MIAC this season. Freshman
Max Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) led all Division III student-athletes to claim third overall in the 400-meter hurdles (57.27) and finished ninth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.55). Both times were season bests.
Junior
Raymond Twumasi (Coon Rapids, Minn.) took fifth in the triple jump (14.01 meters) with the second-best mark in the MIAC this season. Junior
Peyton Thiry (Lester Prairie, Minn./Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity) improved his previous best by over two full meters to take seventh, first among Division III throwers, in the hammer (51.47 meters). Sophomore
Matthew Burgstahler (Sandpoint, Idaho) and Connor Franta (La Crescent, Minn.) finished fourth (9:56.78) and sixth (10:10.91), respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay took third (43.19), second among Division III competition, while the 4x400-meter relay claimed fifth (3:25.76).
ANOTHER FRESHMAN RECORD FALLS: Schoenbauer broke the program's freshman record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.94 seconds, the second-fastest time in the MIAC this season, in St. Paul last Saturday. The time is good for 36th in NCAA Division III this season. He is also fourth in the MIAC with a time of 10.91 seconds in the 100-meter dash 10.91, which is 45th nationally. Classmate
Kai Barber (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace) broke the school's freshman record in the shot put earlier this outdoor season and is currently fifth in the MIAC (15.69 meters).
TRIO TRAVELS TO LA CROSSE: Three Johnnie runners are traveling to compete at Wisconsin-La Crosse's Phil Esten Challenge today. Feichtinger will run the 1,500 meters (8:14 p.m.), junior
Ryan Bugler (Okinawa, Japan/Kubasaki) will compete in the steeplechase (6:53 p.m.) and junior
Sam Friesen (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) will take part in the 10,000 meters (10:02 p.m.).

WHO ELSE WILL BE IN NORTHFIELD: In addition to SJU, the host Knights and their neighbors, St. Olaf, other schools scheduled to compete Saturday include Augsburg, Bethany Lutheran, Bethel, Concordia-Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul, Crown, Gustavus Adolphus, Hamline, Macalester, Martin Luther, Minnesota and St. Thomas.
LAST YEAR'S MEET: SJU recorded six top-five finishes at last year's Carleton Relays held on April 18 (2015) in Northfield. Team scores were not calculated. Feichtinger led the Johnnies with a first-place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:52.86, which was good for fifth in the MIAC so far this season. Bugler crossed the finish line second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:45.15).
Jake Lammi '15 placed third in the 400 meters (49.94), while Twumasi took third in the triple jump (13.25 meters).
NATIONAL PLACEMENT: The Johnnies currently have seven marks/times in the NCAA Division III's top 50 (thru April 21). In addition to Schoenbauer's times in the 100- (45th) and 200-meter (36th) dashes, Feichtinger is 42nd in the 5,000 meters (14:51.10) and Twumasi is 23rd in the triple jump (14.01 meters). In the throws, Barber is 26th in the shot put (15.69 meters) and Thiry is 34th in the hammer (51.47 meters). Perez is 27th in the javelin (57.09 meters).
IN THE MIAC: SJU currently touts 23 top-eight marks/times in the MIAC this outdoor season, including 15 in the top five of their respective event.
