The third-seeded Johnnies (18-7, 13-7 MIAC) will play host to the sixth-seeded Auggies in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals this Wednesday, Feb. 24. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Sexton Arena.
SJU added to its eight-point (35-27) halftime lead by making seven of its first eight shots in the second half to build a 15-point lead (52-37) five minutes in. The Johnnies' lead dipped to as little as nine and grew to as much as 20 the rest of the way.
The Johnnies shot 52.6 percent (30-for-57) for the game, including 60.7 percent (17-for-28) in the second half.
The three-point shot returned for SJU, which had shot only 21.3 percent (13-for-61) from behind the arc over the previous three games, 19 percent below its season average. The visitors made 12 of their 30 three-point attempts (40 percent) on the afternoon.
Senior guard
Alex Schmitt (Waconia, Minn.) led SJU with 17 points, which enabled him to move past Paul Henrichs '06 for 10th in school history with 1,251 career points.
Seniors
Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and
Joe Risinger (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) followed with 15 points apiece. Kuck also chipped in eight assists and seven rebounds, while Risinger added six boards. Kuck is 12th in SJU history with 1,235 career points, three behind Henrichs in 11th.
Joe Zangel led Augsburg (15-10, 10-10 MIAC) with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Collin Olmscheid tallied 17.
