Johnnies Clinch Playoff Bid With Sweep of Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn. – Saint John's hockey completed the weekend sweep of Saint Mary's and clinched a berth in the five-team MIAC Playoffs with a 4-2 win on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Winona.

The Johnnies (10-9-4, 8-4-2 MIAC) built a 4-0 lead and are now 5-0-2 in their last seven MIAC games.

Sophomore forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) started the scoring with his seventh goal of the season with 1:49 left in the second period. He later assisted on senior captain Andrew Commers' (Edina, Minn.) goal, which gave SJU a 3-0 lead at the 11:22 mark of the third period, to give him four points (1g/3a) on the weekend and an even 20 (7g/13a) on the season.

Sophomore forward Sam Valerius (Maple Grove, Minn.) tallied the Johnnies' second goal of the game 4:55 into the third frame and freshman forward matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) made it 4-0 on a power-play goal with 5:43 remaining.

Jonathon Elliott erased the shutout with 3:15 left for SMU (9-14-2, 6-9-1 MIAC) and Chad Cesarz ended the scoring with an extra attacker at the 19:23 mark.

Senior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 26 saves and freshman forward Mitch Fritz (St. Cloud, Minn.) collected two assists in the win. Fritz posted a four-point weekend (1g/3a), including the game-winning goal in Friday's 5-4 victory, and now has 13 points (5g/8a) in his last nine games.

SJU is now 6-0-1 in conference road games this season and has wins in 12 of the last 14 meetings with the Cardinals in Winona.

The Johnnies travel to face league-leading Augsburg for a 7 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 19, in Minneapolis.
