SJU's Seniors Aptly Lead the Way on Senior Day

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's five seniors led the way on Senior Day in a 75-64 win over Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Collegeville.

The five seniors shot 55.8 percent (24-for-43) from the floor and scored 58 of the team's 75 points (77.3 percent).

With the win and losses by Bethel (to St. Thomas) and Carleton (to Augsburg), SJU (17-6, 12-6 MIAC) clinched a berth to the six-team MIAC Playoffs.

A 7-2 scoring advantage off turnovers (6-2 in favor of Concordia) proved to be the difference as SJU took a 33-28 lead into the break.

The Johnnies made four of their first five three-point attempts of the second half to build a nine-point lead (53-44) with 11:31 remaining; a lead that never dipped below nine points the rest of the way.



Senior wing Joe Risinger (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led SJU with 17 points, while senior guard Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) followed with 16 points, seven assists and seven rebounds. Senior guard Alex Schmitt (Waconia, Minn.) added 11 points and five boards.

Kuck moved to within one assist of eighth place on SJU's all-time list (260 by Ryan Lieser '08) and cracked the top 10 on two other lists: three-pointers made (130) and steals (114).

Seniors Jordan Peterson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Mitch Wollin (Litchfield, Minn.) provided a lift off the bench for SJU, which shot 46 percent from the field (29-for-63) and 25 percent (6-for-24) from three-point range in the win. Wollin posted season highs in both points (8) and rebounds (5), while Peterson chipped in six points and four boards. The duo combined to go 7-for-9 from the field.

Jordan Bolger led the Cobbers (15-9, 12-7 MIAC) with 22 points and 16 rebounds, but contributed four of the team's 13 turnovers.

Concordia entered the game second in all of NCAA Division III in shooting percentage (.516), but made only 44.3 percent (27-for-61) of its shots and went to the free-throw line three times (1-for-3) Saturday afternoon.

SJU out-rebounded CC 37-33 and scoring advantages of 40-24 in the paint and 13-6 off turnovers.

The Johnnies travel to face Gustavus Adolphus for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Feb. 17, in St. Peter.
