Macalester Edges SJU Soccer in Overtime, 3-2

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's soccer battled back from two deficits but fell to Macalester in overtime, 3-2, on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Collegeville.

Jake Burke scored the game-winner for the Scots, who were listed fifth in the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) North Region rankings released earlier today, 1:48 into overtime. A shot from Ionatan Kuperwajs was blocked by a SJU defender, but the deflection went right to Burke in front.

Charlie Spurr gave Macalester (11-3-3, 5-2-2 MIAC) a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick with 2:47 left before halftime.

Sophomore midfielder Uriel Cordoba (Medford, Ore./South Medford) tied the match at 1-1 for SJU (5-8-3, 4-4-1 MIAC) with his first collegiate goal 11:42 into the second half. Senior forward Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) directed a shot on net that was blocked, but the deflection went in the box to Cordoba, who spun and unleashed a shot to the back of the net.

The deadlock did not last long, however, as Jamel Benhamida gave the lead back to Mac on a shot from 20 yards out 1:24 later.

Sophomore forward Zack Boerjan (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) tied it back up at 2-2 with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, on a nice service from junior midfielder Tyler Street (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit), in the 61st minute.

The Scots posted a 23-21 edge in shots, though the statistic was a tale of two halves. The visitors posted a 12-6 advantage in the first half, including the final nine shots before intermission. SJU roared back with a 15-9 lead to gain the momentum in the second half.

The Johnnies wrap up the regular-season schedule with a 3:30 p.m. game this Saturday, Oct. 29, at St. Olaf in Northfield.
