COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Seven different Johnnies scored an offensive touchdown as No. 10/12 Saint John's earned a 62-0 win over Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 15, in Collegeville's Clemens Stadium.
SJU (6-1, 4-1 MIAC) also set a new program record with its third blocked punt for a touchdown this season and second in as many games.
The Johnnies out-gained Carleton (1-6, 1-4 MIAC) 551-140 in the game, including a 324-23 margin on the ground, and posted a 30-10 advantage in first downs. SJU forced three-and-outs on the Knights' first six offensive possessions (eight total) and recorded a goal-line stand (a first-and-goal opportunity from SJU's four-yard line) with 2:19 remaining in the game.
The shutout was SJU's third of the season and second in a row. The last time the Johnnies posted three shutouts or more in a season was 2004. The back-to-back shutouts are the first since 2001.
Senior wide receiver
Evan Clark (Phoenix, Ariz./Apollo) caught five passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. His 10-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback
Ben Alvord (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo) on the Johnnies' opening possession of the second half gave SJU a 42-0 lead and ended the day for the starters. Clark now has 11 receiving touchdowns on the year, including one in each of the seven games this season, and 14 in his last 11 games going back to last fall. He has 16 receptions for 364 yards and four touchdowns in his last three games.
Alvord made his third consecutive start in place of freshman
Jackson Erdmann (Rosemount, Minn.) and finished eight of 12 passing for 183 yards and two touchdowns. He started the day's scoring with a seven-yard touchdown run four minutes into the game. Alvord connected with sophomore wide receiver
Will Gillach (Lindstrom, Minn./Chisago Lakes) for a 39-yard touchdown on fourth-and-five five minutes later.
Sophomore running back
Adam Essler (New London, Minn./New London-Spicer) led SJU's rushing attack with 76 yards and a third-quarter touchdown on 10 carries. The 76 yards set a new team high by a Johnnie this season, breaking his previous mark of 69 yards set on Sept. 10 at Buena Vista (Iowa).
Junior running back
Dusty Krueger (Lake Elmo, Minn./Hill-Murray) blocked his second punt in as many games with 10:46 remaining in the second quarter. Sophomore safety
Jake Engelken (Maple Grove, Minn.) picked up the loose ball and bulldozed in from eight yards out to give SJU a 35-0 lead.
Senior linebacker
Jack Pietruszewski (South St. Paul, Minn.) led SJU's defense with seven tackles (three solo), including two for a loss and a forced fumble. Sophomore defensive lineman
Ted Kalina (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added four tackles (three solo), including 3.5 for a loss and a sack.
The Johnnies travel south to face Gustavus Adolphus (3-3, 1-3 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. game next Saturday, Oct. 22, in St. Peter.
