Late Run Subdues SJU in Overtime Loss

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's basketball suffered a 75-72 overtime loss to Carleton on Monday, Jan. 25, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (13-4, 8-4 MIAC) scored the first four points of overtime and led by four, 66-62, halfway through the extra frame before the Knights went on a 10-2 run. Kevin Grow accounted for eight of the 10 points during the run and finished with 25 points, 19 rebounds and four blocks, including 10 points and four boards in overtime alone.

A layup from senior wing Joe Risinger (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) with nine seconds remaining cut SJU's deficit to one (73-72), but Mitchell Biewen made both free throws on the other end for Carleton (11-6, 8-4 MIAC) and senior guard Alex Schmitt's (Waconia, Minn.) game-tying, three-point attempt bounced off the rim.

A three-pointer from senior guard Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) gave SJU a one-point lead (60-59) with 1:13 remaining. Grow made one of his two free throws with six seconds left to tie the game and Kuck's desperation three-point attempt missed the mark at the horn to send the game to overtime.

Kuck led SJU with 24 points, on 10 of 19 shooting, and added four assists and two steals. Schmitt followed with 14 points, but scored only four points after halftime and went 1-for-9 from three-point range in the game.

Risinger added 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) collected 11 points and seven boards.

SJU shot 29.6 percent (8-for-27) from behind the arc, including 4-for-16 (25 percent) after halftime. The home team entered the game shooting 40.8 percent this season from downtown.

Carleton out-rebounded SJU 45-28 in the game and registered 15 points off nine turnovers, compared to only 11 points for the Johnnies off 14 Knight miscues.

The Johnnies play host to Hamline for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, Jan. 27, in Sexton Arena.
