Johnnie S&D Wins Seven Events in 150-150 Tie at Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's swimming and diving won seven events in a 150-150 dual tie at Carleton on Saturday, Jan. 23, in Northfield.

Senior Paul Knaak (Forest Lake, Minn./Stillwater Area) won the 100-yard freestyle (47.41) and took second in the 50-yard variety (21.50).

Junior Jose Alvarez (North Bay Village, Fla./Belen Jesuit) won both backstrokes, by 0.04 in the 100 (53.39) and three full seconds in the 200 (1:58.48), and the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.19).

Senior Nolan Bauer (Helena, Mont.) won the 1,650-yard freestyle by 0.10 of a second (17:51.22) and claimed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.07).

The Johnnies' three divers went in order, first through third, in both events: 222.1 in the 1-meter and 225.65 in the 3-meter for junior Justin Wollin (Eagan, Minn.); 207.2 and 211.9 for sophomore Josh Tomporowski (St. Cloud, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice); and 170.35 and 160.8 for sophomore Tyler Urbanski (Lexington, Minn./Centennial).

Junior Andrew Urness (Rosemount, Minn.) and junior Kenny Bergman (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) went 2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle, and sophomore Miao He (Beijing, China/Florida Air Academy) finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (54.64).

SJU's two relays, the 200-yard freestyle (1:27.65; Knaak, Urness, Connor Magee, Bergman) and 200-yard medley (1:39.17l; Braden McCormack, Magee, Alvarez, Knaak), both took second. 

The Johnnies return to action in two weeks at the MIAC Invitational, hosted by St. Thomas, Feb. 5-6 in St. Paul. The meet will serve as the final competition before the 2016 MIAC Championships Feb. 18-20.
