SJU Tallies Five Third-Period Goals in 7-2 Win at St. Olaf

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey broke a 2-2 tie with five third-period goals in a 7-2 win at St. Olaf on Saturday, Jan. 16, in Northfield.

A night after out-shooting the Oles 44-29 in a 4-2 home loss, SJU (6-9-2, 4-4-0 MIAC) scored five goals in an 11:36 span during the third period. The Johnnies posted a 37-21 shot advantage Saturday evening in Northfield.

Junior defenseman Daniel Tripicchio (Hudson, Wis.) recorded a career-high three assists, while junior forward Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) and sophomore forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) collected a goal and an assist each.

Becker started the five-goal stretch with 13:59 remaining and junior forward Dan McNamara (Grand Rapids, Mich.) made it 4-2 1:05 later.

Sekesi lit the lamp for the sixth time this season with 9:17 left and freshman forward Connor Kelly (Chaska, Minn.) added a power-play goal, his second tally of the game and third of the weekend, with 3:54 remaining.

Sophomore forward Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) ended the scoring with his sixth goal of the season at the 17:37 mark.

The Oles (3-11-3, 1-5-2 MIAC) found the scoreboard first only 2:20 into the game.

Kelly tied the game for SJU less than three minutes later on a nice feed from Becker.

Sophomore forward Sam Valerius (Maple Grove, Minn.) gave the visitors a 2-1 lead 2:10 later with an assist going to freshman forward Mitch Fritz (St. Cloud, Minn.). Fritz stole the puck from the STO goaltender and fed Valerius, who was all alone in the slot.

STO tied the game at 2-2 with 11:32 left in the second period.

Senior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 19 saves to improve to 4-9-2 on the year and earn his 42nd career win (42-29-8), which ties him with Mark Rice (1995-98) for the third-most in school history.

The Johnnies return home to host Bethel for a rare Thursday night game at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
