Big First Half Propels SJU Back to the Win Column, 91-68

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's shot 58.6 percent (34-for-58) from the field and made a season-high 14 three-pointers in a 91-68 win over Augsburg on Saturday, Jan. 16, in Collegeville.

The Johnnies (11-3, 6-3 MIAC) made their first nine shots from the floor, including three three-pointers, and finished at 62.1 percent (18-for-29) to take a 44-29 lead into halftime. Both teams shot over 55 percent in the second half, but SJU's lead stayed in double digits the rest of the way.

Senior guard Alex Schmitt (Waconia, Minn.) led all scorers with 22 points, his eighth 20-point game of the season, and made a career-high six three-pointers. The 22-point game enabled him to jump four spots to 25th on SJU's all-time scoring list (1,074 career points).



Senior guard Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and senior wing Joe Risinger (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) followed with 19 points apiece. Kuck added nine assists, while Risinger chipped in five assists and five rebounds. Risinger went eight of 11 from the field for 17 points in the first half alone.

Sophomore post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) added 11 points and 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double and fifth of the season. 

SJU's starters combined to shoot 66 percent (31-for-47) from the field, including 63.2 percent (12-for-19) from three-point range. The Johnnies also posted a 38-21 advantage on the glass, but committed 19 turnovers.

Brett Rasmussen led the Auggies (9-5, 4-5 MIAC) with 17 points. The visitors shot 23.1 percent (3-for-13) from behind the arc and 61.9 percent (13-for-21) from the free-throw line in the contest.

The Johnnies wrap up their three-game homestand against Gustavus Adolphus on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Sexton Arena.
