SJU Rolls to Sweep of Hamline, 8-1 and 15-2

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's baseball batted .478 on the day, out-hitting Hamline 33-9, in a doubleheader sweep of the Pipers on Wednesday, April 29, at the new CHS Stadium in St. Paul.

Senior lefty Tyler Delwiche (Andover, Minn./Totino-Grace) held Hamline (21-17, 8-10 MIAC) to two hits in game one's 8-1 victory before the Johnnies (21-12, 11-5 MIAC) erupted for 21 hits in game two's 15-2 win, which was called after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. The pair of wins extended the Johnnies' winning streak to eight games.

Delwiche went the distance, allowing an unearned run to even his season record at 3-3. He struck out seven and walked five.

Junior catcher Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a 4-for-9 performance on the day. He tallied three RBI, three runs scored and a double.

Senior centerfielder Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) led the SJU bats with five hits in eight at-bats and added four RBI with four runs scored. He became the school's all-time leader in at-bats (495) and moved into second in career hits (161), runs (111) and games played (137) in the doubleheader.

Senior catcher Kurt Jantscher (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) went 4-for-6, including his team-leading sixth home run of the season in game one, with five runs scored and two RBI. A pair of Eastview products, junior first baseman Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) and sophomore third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview), also added four hits apiece.

Senior Collin Felhaber (North St. Paul, Minn.) improved to 5-1 on the year with the win in game two. He allowed the two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts (to two walks) in six innings. 

SJU batted .476 (20-for-42) with runners in scoring position and .473 (26-for-55) with runners on base in the two games. 

The Johnnies have out-scored their opponents 71-25 and are batting .386 (95-for-246), including .485 (50-for-103) with runners in scoring position, during the current eight-game winning streak. The pitching staff boasts a 2.90 ERA and a .242 opponent batting average during the stretch.

The Johnnies return to Collegeville for their home finale, a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Gustavus Adolphus, on Saturday, May 2, at Saint John's Field. The third annual Diamond Dash 5k will be held at 10 a.m. prior to the doubleheader.
