Game 2 Box ScoreTUCSON, Ariz. – Saint John's baseball ended its Tucson trip with a doubleheader sweep of Middlebury (Vt.), 12-4 and 17-9, on Saturday, March 21.
SJU (9-6 overall) batted .471 (33-for-70) on the day, including .511 (24-for-47) with runners on base and .559 (19-for-34) with runners in scoring position.
The Johnnies recorded a nine-run inning in each game of the doubleheader. The first shattered a 3-1 lead for Middlebury (0-2 overall) in the sixth inning of game one.
Sophomore
Derek Graves (Mora, Minn.) went the distance, allowing the four runs (three earned) on eight hits.
The Panthers jumped on sophomore
Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep) for six runs in the first inning of game two and built a 7-2 lead, but SJU tallied three runs in the bottom of the second and nine more in the third to break the game open.
Kendall earned his first collegiate win, surrendering 11 hits and seven runs (two earned) in four innings.
Senior
Aaron Pfaff (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral) went 5-for-9 on the afternoon with six runs scored, four RBI and his first collegiate home run. Sophomore
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) matched Pfaff's 5-for-9 performance and four RBI, while junior
Gabe MacDonald (Minneapolis, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI in game two alone.
With his five hits, Pfaff moved into fifth in SJU history with 139 for his career. He is now five hits behind assistant coach Chad Krueger '99 for fourth.
Senior
Brett Becker (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) and junior
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) totaled four hits apiece. Senior
Geno Larkin (Eden Prairie, Minn.) served as the catalyst in game two's nine-run third inning with a three-run homer, the first of his career.
The Johnnies open the MIAC schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader next Saturday, March 28, at St. Olaf.
