Near Misses Haunt SJU Soccer in MIAC Playoff Loss

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – A furious rally in the final five minutes fell short for Saint John's soccer in a 1-0 loss to St. Olaf in the MIAC Playoff semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 4, in Collegeville.

The Oles (12-7-1, 6-3-1 MIAC) gained the 1-0 advantage on a goal from Jens Undlin in the 84th minute. Undlin began a sprint up the left sideline and collided with junior defender Justin DuQue (Union, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) just past midfield, and proceeded to possess the ball into the box and beat senior goalkeeper Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) with a semi-breakaway goal.

A beautiful one-timer shot by senior forward Paul Wageman (Roseville, Minn./DeLaSalle) just went wide of the net on the preceding play. A header from 6-foot-6 defender Cole Howard (Ridgefield, Wash./Skyview) barely went over the top of the net with under five minutes to play and Wageman hit the crossbar with 1:12 remaining. Senior midfielder Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.) ripped a shot on net with two seconds remaining and the STO goalkeeper was able to deflect it into the air. Junior midfielder Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) was able to get a foot on the deflection, but the shot was blocked short of the goal line.

SJU (12-4-2, 7-2-1 MIAC) out-shot the Oles 17-16 (6-5 on goal), including a 13-5 margin in the second half.

The Johnnies, who were ranked fourth in today's NCAA North Region rankings, have an outside chance of earning an at-large bid to next week's NCAA Division III tournament. The field is scheduled to be announced at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9, on www.ncaa.com.
