Schmitt's Three-Pointer at the Buzzer Gives SJU an 80-79 Win

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – Saint John's senior guard Alex Schmitt (Waconia, Minn.) hit a three-pointer at the horn to give the Johnnies an 80-79 win at Lewis & Clark on Friday, Nov. 27, in Portland, Ore.

Schmitt made a three-pointer, his first of the game, with eight seconds left in the opening half to give SJU (3-0 overall) a 39-37 lead at the break. He led the Johnnies with 26 points, on 10 of 13 shooting (4-for-6 from behind the arc), with six rebounds and four assists.

Following an SJU shot-clock violation with 51 seconds remaining in the game, Cannen Roberson hit a 14-footer, after an SJU defender slipped and fell to the floor, to give Lewis & Clark (2-3 overall) a 79-77 lead. Roberson led the Pioneers with 24 points and nine rebounds.

SJU inbounded its final possession to sophomore guard Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley), who found himself in immediate double coverage, with seven seconds left. He found Schmitt, who dribbled to the top of the key and drained a three-pointer as time expired.

Senior guard Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) had another eventful night, scoring 18 points with eight rebounds and six assists.

Sophomore post Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 2:16 left in the game.

SJU shot 59.3 percent (32-for-54) from the field, but left at least eight points at the free-throw line (8-for-16), thanks to a handful of misses on the front end of a one-and-one, and committed 14 turnovers. Lewis & Clark turned those 14 miscues into 15 points (15-2 advantage off turnovers).

The Johnnies end their Thanksgiving trip with a 5 p.m. game at George Fox on Saturday, Nov. 28, in Newberg, Ore.
