Johnnies Complete the Sweep of No. 14 Hamline With 4-3 Win

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's hockey surrendered a 3-0 lead but recorded the deciding goal with 3:17 remaining to earn a 4-3 win over No. 14 Hamline and complete the series sweep of the Pipers on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Oscar Johnson Arena in St. Paul.

Freshman forward Matt Colford (Champlin, Minn.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 3:17 left, his second tally of the season, on a feed from behind the net by sophomore forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany).

Senior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 37 saves to earn the 40th win of his SJU career (40-24-8 career record).

The Johnnies (2-4-2, 2-2-0 MIAC) took advantage of 2:24 on a 5-on-3 power play in the second period thanks to overlapping five-minute major penalties on the Pipers. SJU tallied two power-play goals during that span and added another after the first major penalty expired.

Sekesi gave SJU a 1-0 lead 1:37 into the second period with his third goal of the season, and second on the power play, on an assist from freshman defenseman Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.).

Sophomore forward Tyler Dunagan (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored his second goal in as many games 1:02 later, with assists going to Sekesi and senior forward Andrew Commers (Edina, Minn.).

Senior forward Neal Smith (Rogers, Minn.) pushed the Johnnies' lead to 3-0 with his third tally of the season at the 4:50 mark of the second period. Colford recorded his first collegiate assist on the scoring play.

Charlie Adams put Hamline (3-3-2, 1-2-1 MIAC) on the scoreboard with 4:50 left in the second and Brandon Reinholz cut the Johnnies' lead to 3-2 on a power-play goal with 1:31 left.

Adams tied the game on a rebound goal 6:09 into the third period.

The Johnnies travel to New York for a pair of games over Thanksgiving Break, beginning with a 6 p.m. game at Utica on Friday, Nov. 27. SJU ends the trip with a 3 p.m. game against No. 15 Oswego State on Saturday, Nov. 28, at Utica.
