Box ScoreCOLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – No. 12 Saint John's football held Augsburg's high-power offense in check and scored 42 consecutive points in a 42-14 win on Saturday, Oct. 31, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (7-1, 5-1 MIAC) allowed 368 yards offense, 251 through the first three quarters, to an Augsburg team that entered Saturday's game averaging 512 yards and 37.7 points per game.
The Auggies (3-5, 2-4 MIAC) took the opening kickoff and went 75 yards, ending on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Ayrton Scott to Joey Sonnenfeld, but SJU responded with 42 consecutive points to earn the win.
Senior All-American running back
Sam Sura (South St. Paul, Minn.) recorded his third, four-touchdown game of the season. He totaled 195 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, including a career-long 78-yard touchdown run to ice the game in the fourth quarter, and also caught a 13-yard touchdown pass. He became the fifth Johnnie in school history to eclipse 1,000 yards rushing in two different seasons. Sura has 1,173 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground this fall.
Senior wide receiver
Josh Bungum (Paynesville, Minn.) recorded his third consecutive game of 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns in the victory, posting seven receptions for 101 yards and two scores. The 100-yard receiving performance was the sixth of his career. Bungum has caught 17 passes for 367 yards (21.6 avg.) and six touchdowns in his last three games.
Senior quarterback
Nick Martin (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) had another efficient afternoon, going 14 of 18 passing for 179 and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 7 times for 63 yards. Martin is 36 of 47 passing (.766) for 659 yards and nine touchdowns in his last three games.
Scott totaled 121 yards rushing for the Auggies and threw for 182 yards. He was sacked four times, however, for a loss of 40 yards. Sonnenfeld caught 13 passes for 103 yards.
After both teams turned the ball over on downs in the opponent's territory, Augsburg found itself in a 1st-and-goal situation on the SJU 4-yard line thanks to a 46-yard scamper by Scott. The Johnnies' defense, however, held strong and forced a 22-yard field goal attempt, which sailed wide right. SJU answered with a 5-play, 80-yard scoring drive that ended on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Bungum with 5:12 left in the second quarter.
Senior linebacker
Drake Matuska (Kasson, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville) led SJU with 11 tackles (three solo), including a sack. The SJU secondary broke up seven passes.
The Johnnies travel to face Bethel (5-3, 4-2 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. kickoff next Saturday, Nov. 7, in Arden Hills.
Notes: The 100-yard rushing performance was the 16th of Sura's career, which positions him two games behind Tim Schmitz's record of 18…Sura (3,590) needs 344 rushing yards to pass Schmitz for SJU's all-time rushing record…Sura has 667 yards and 13 touchdowns on 104 carries (6.4 per carry, 166.8 per game) in his last four games…SJU entered the game at 39.7 percent (29-for-73) on third down, but went 8-for-10 Saturday.
