Johnnies Battle Back to Tie, Earn Extra Point With Shootout Win

Box Score

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's hockey earned two crucial points in conference play with a 1-1 tie against Gustavus Adolphus, and a shootout win (1-0), on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

Senior forward John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) went top shelf on SJU's third attempt of the shootout and junior goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) denied the Gusties' Tyler Lapic on the other end to give the Johnnies (8-5-5, 4-3-2 MIAC) the extra point in the MIAC standings.

Following two scoreless periods to start the game, Jack Walsh gave GAC (6-7-7, 3-3-5 MIAC) a 1-0 lead 1:20 into the third period. A shot off the leg pad of Soley deflected perfectly to Walsh, who was all alone to the right of the goaltender.

Sophomore forward Kevin Becker (Roseville, Minn.) tied the game on the power play for SJU with 3:07 remaining. Junior defenseman Joe Freemark (Lakeville, Minn.) sent a seam pass from the right circle to Becker, who went short-side for his third goal of the season. Senior defenseman Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) collected the second assist. Freshman forward Huba Sekesi (Germering, Germany) blasted a shot that ricocheted from one pipe across to the other seconds before the game-tying goal.

Soley made 28 saves for SJU, which out-shot GAC 35-29 and went 1-for-4 on the power play. The Gusties entered the game with NCAA Division III's second-best penalty kill at 91.1 percent (51-for-56).

The Johnnies travel to face the Gusties for a 7 p.m. puck-drop on Saturday, Jan. 31, in St. Peter.
