COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior soccer student-athlete
Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) earned the 2014 Fr. Wilfred Theisen Student-Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by the J-Club, at the SJU Senior Banquet May 4.
Coborn was the third Johnnie soccer student-athlete to earn All-MIAC first-team honors all four seasons, joining forward Mike Lilly (1974-77) and goalkeeper Terry Leiendecker (1980-83), and was a three-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-North Region selection.
He led SJU in assists (9), shots (58) and shots-on-goal (33) for the fourth consecutive season in 2013, and also finished first on the team with 21 points. His nine assists, five in conference play, tied him for first in the MIAC.
Coborn ended his career as SJU's all-time leader in assists (36), third in points (88) and fifth in goals (26) in 71 career matches.
From the day that Michael enrolled at Saint John's, I knew that he would be a four-year catalyst in our attack," head coach
John Haws said. "The fact that he seized the opportunity he was given in the classroom is what I am most proud of, though."
He truly embraced the proposition of being a collegiate student-athlete, as did the other impressive finalists for the Wilfred Theisen Award."
Senior hockey defenseman Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) and senior golfer Casey Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) were runners-up for the 2014 award. Vangsness was unable to attend the Senior Banquet due to the golf team's alumni meet Sunday.
Theisen taught physics at SJU for 47 years and was named Professor Emeritus at his retirement in 2005. He is a former SJU faculty representative to the MIAC and continues as treasurer of the J-Club.
Established in 2013, the Fr. Wilfred Theisen Student-Athlete of the Year Award was first awarded to All-American golfer Dennis Granath '13 last spring.
