Underclassmen Shine for SJU in Fourth-Place Finish at MIAC Championships

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's won two individual conference titles and finished fourth out of 11 teams, two points behind third, at the 2014 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 10, on the campus of St. Olaf in Northfield.

St. Thomas won the team title with 172.5 points, followed by the host Oles (159), Hamline (110), SJU (108) and Gustavus Adolphus (66.5).

SJU recorded six individual All-MIAC (top three) performances on the day, including five by underclassmen (freshmen or sophomores).

Sophomore Thomas Feichtinger (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) repeated as the MIAC's outdoor champion in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.62. He won the event at the MIAC Indoor Championships in March and earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, in addition to the MIAC title, last May.

Freshmen finished in the top three in the discus and SJU had two of them. Quinn Anderson (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) won the MIAC title with a distance of 47.18 meters, the conference's best mark in the event this season. A Johnnie has now won the discus at the MIAC Outdoor Championships five of the last six years: Griffin Hayes (2009 and 2011), Wade Powers (2010 and 2012). Classmate Dustin Gill (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) took third with a toss of 45.49 meters. Junior Ben Rossini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Rosemount) and senior Brian Vargason (Owatonna, Minn.) followed in sixth (44.31 meters) and eighth (43.80 meters), respectively.

Vargason also finished fourth in the hammer throw (49.91 meters), 1.94 meters from third.

Another pair of underclassmen, sophomore Zach Roy (Andover, Minn.) and freshman Raymond Twumasi (Coon Rapids, Minn.), claimed second (13.81 meters) and third (13.71 meters), respectively, in the triple jump.

Junior Nick Welshons (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) earned All-MIAC distinction with a third-place finish in the high jump (1.98 meters).

Another Wayzata grad, senior John Subialka, took fifth in the 5,000 meters (15:06.73).

Freshman Ryan Bugler (Okinawa, Japan/Okinawa Christian School International) and senior Nate Engel (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) finished fifth (9:45.98) and seventh (9:55.52), respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Junior Jordan Tradewell (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) took sixth in the 400 meters (50.13) and freshman Ryan Kuester (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) claimed sixth in the 100-meter dash (11.25).

The Johnnies travel south to compete at the Wisconsin-La Crosse "Last-Chance" Qualifier at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 15, in La Crosse, Wis.
