Dominating First Period Dooms SJU in Loss to No. 15 Gustavus

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 15 Gustavus Adolphus tallied three goals in the first period and handed Saint John's a 4-1 loss on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.

The win completes the first regular-season MIAC sweep for Gustavus (13-4-3, 10-1-1 MIAC) over SJU since the 1994-95 season.

The Gusties started the game with a barrage of shots, out-shooting SJU (11-8, 5-5 MIAC) by a 21-7 margin on net, including three goals and added another off the pipe. Andy Pearson snapped the Johnnies' penalty-kill streak at 34 with a power-play goal 6:13 into the game, while Corey Leivermann added a pair of goals 6:49 apart.

Adam Smyth made it 4-0 with another power-play goal 3:37 into the third period.

Junior Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) erased the shutout with his fifth goal of the season, on a deflection from senior Justin Hochsprung (Alexandria, Minn.), at the 11:48 mark of the third. Senior Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) was credited with the second assist.

Sophomore goaltender Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) was saddled with the loss, stopping 18 of the 21 shots in the first period. Senior Mitch Thompson (Onalaska, Wis.) relieved Soley to start the second and made 21 saves the rest of the way as SJU was out-shot 43-28 in the contest.

The Johnnies travel to face Hamline for a 7:05 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 7, at Oscar Johnson Arena in St. Paul.
