COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's won its 2013 season opener, and inaugural match on Haws Field, in fine fashion with a 5-1 decision over Minnesota-Morris on Friday, Aug. 30, in Collegeville.
Junior David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) gave SJU an early 1-0 lead with his 10th career goal 5:32 into the match. Classmates Nicholas DeVetter (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) and Zane Heinselman (River Falls, Wis.) tallied the assists.
Freshman Sam Newman (St. Louis, Mo./Priory) added to the lead with a blast off the crossbar and in for his first collegiate goal 20 minutes later. Senior Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) earned the assist, the first of two on the day. He is now tied with Eric Ross (1993-96) for the most assists in SJU history with 29.
Heinselman padded the Johnnies' lead in the second half off a corner kick from Coborn. The initial kick went to sophomore Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.), who ripped a shot that deflect off Heinselman and to the back of the net.
Coborn made it 4-0 three minutes later. Junior Josh Whitaker (Milwaukie, Ore.) fed Wee, whose shot deflected directly to Coborn open on the left side. The goal, Coborn's 21st of his career, ties him with associate head coach Tudor Flintham (2002-05) for ninth in SJU history.
Ebrima Badgie erased the shutout for SJU at the 63:55 mark of the second half on a pair of nice passes from Matt Vik and Matthew Bennis.
Senior Matt Carson (Waconia, Minn.) ended the scoring for both teams with 15 minutes remaining. Freshman Nick Van Marter (Portland, Ore./Cleveland) found senior Elliott Olsen (East Bethel, Minn./St. Francis) open on the left side, who lofted a pass to Carson in the box. Carson then raced the goalkeeper to the far corner and snuck a shot inside the right post.
Senior Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) made two saves to earn his eighth career win. SJU out-shot Morris 28-8 in the match, including an 11-3 advantage on net.
The Johnnies are now 22-8-3 in season openers since 1981, including a 15-1-1 record in Collegeville.
SJU plays host to Concordia (Wis.) for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Haws Field.
