Augsburg Shoots 68 Percent, Ends SJU's 7-Game Win Streak

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Augsburg shot 68 percent (34-for-50) from the field to snap Saint John's win streak at seven games with a 106-87 victory on Monday, Feb. 4, in Minneapolis.

Augsburg (16-5, 11-5 MIAC) shot 63.3 percent (19-for-30) and out-scored SJU 24-12 in the paint to take a 48-41 lead into halftime.

SJU (10-11, 9-7 MIAC) cut its deficit to six (85-79) with 4:20 left, but shots in the paint on each of the Johnnies' next three possessions rolled around the rim and out and Augsburg proceeded to out-score the visitors 21-8 the rest of the way.

The Auggies finished 31-for-39 at the free-throw line as fouls were whistled 27-15 against SJU. The home team shot 7-for-11 from three-point range in the contest and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the floor in the second half.

Junior Seth Marx (Maple Grove, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) led all scorers with 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season. Freshman Alex Schmitt (Chaska, Minn./Waconia) added 15 points off the bench before fouling out with 58 seconds remaining.

Senior Chris Neumann (Winsted, Minn./Holy Trinity) totaled nine points in 17 minutes of play due to foul trouble. He fouled out with 4:35 left. Junior Patrick Butcher (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier) followed with eight points in the start in place of SJU's second-leading scorer (9.9 ppg., 11.2 ppg. in MIAC play), freshman Mitchell Kuck (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial), who is battling infections in both ears. Kuck collected seven points in 12 minutes off the bench.

Dan Kornbaum led the Auggies with 27 points, while Parker Hines and Tyler Schmidt added 17 points apiece.

SJU out-rebounded Augsburg 30-27, including 15-7 on the offensive glass, but surrendered a 44-32 scoring advantage in the paint.

The Johnnies travel the other direction from Collegeville, northwest to Concordia for a 7:30 p.m. game Wednesday, Feb. 6, at Memorial Auditorium in Moorhead.
