ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's handed No. 15 Augsburg its first loss of the 2013-14 season with a 5-0 shutout on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The game was the first of seven consecutive at home for SJU, following a brutal stretch in which the Johnnies started the season with eight of their first nine games away from St. Cloud.
Sophomore
Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 25 saves to improve to 4-4 on the season and earn his third career shutout. The Johnnies out-shot Augsburg 36-25 in the game despite spending a combined 16:33 on the penalty kill. Augsburg (8-1-1, 2-1-1 MIAC) went 0-for-9 on the power play.
Senior
Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) took advantage of an Augsburg turnover at the blue line and gave SJU (5-5, 3-3 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season 5:30 into the first period. Junior
Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tallied the assist. The Johnnies posted a 14-4 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period despite being on the penalty kill four separate occasions in the frame.
The shot advantage finally turned into goals as the Johnnies erupted for three goals in the second period. Junior
Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) gave SJU a 2-0 lead with the Johnnies' first shorthanded goal of the season 1:10 into the period. Senior
Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) assisted on the goal, which was Johnson's second of the season and his 40th career point.
Sophomore
Alex Ach (Champlin, Minn.) ripped a wrist shot to the far corner of the net with 6:12 left in the period to give the home team a 3-0 lead. Senior captain
Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) tallied the lone assist.
Senior
Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) made it 4-0 with his second power-play goal in as many games less than two minutes later. Juniors
John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.) and
Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) assisted on the goal, which was Gross' fifth of the season and his eighth career power-play goal.
Ach ended the scoring and recorded his first multi-goal game with 17 seconds remaining, on Soley's second career assist.
The Johnnies return to non-conference action with a 7 p.m. game Thursday, Dec. 12, against Wisconsin-River Falls at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
