SJU Visits La Crosse Saturday for Three Duals

The Johnnies continue dual action with three this Saturday, Dec. 7, in La Crosse, Wis. SJU is scheduled to face No. 21/30 Wisconsin-Stevens Point (9 a.m.), Waldorf of Iowa (11 a.m.) and No. 21/25 Cornell of Iowa (1 p.m.).

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: St. Cloud State, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, posted a 38-0 shutout of Saint John's on Dec. 5 in St. Cloud. The shutout is the first against SJU since Nov. 22, 2006, at then-No. 1 Augsburg (43-0). Sophomore John Wells (Janesville, Wis./Miltona) erased a 4-0 deficit with six straight points, including over a minute of riding time, to build a 6-4 lead at 125 pounds but was pinned by Tanner Johnshoy in 3:43. SCSU's Andy Pokorny, a redshirt-senior ranked No. 2 in Division II and a two-time national runner-up, gave the Huskies a 10-0 lead with a 15-1 major decision over sophomore Mike Pleski (Stacy, Minn./Forest Lake) at 133.

Matt Nelson, ranked second nationally at 141 pounds and a returning All-American (fifth place), posted a 10-4 decision over sophomore Ben Henle (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer), who is ranked as high as No. 5 nationally for SJU. Jay Hildreth tallied a 10-3 decision against junior Joe Hessing (Loretto, Minn./Delano) at 149 pounds, while Clint Poster recorded an 8-2 win over senior Ryan Arne (Orono, Minn.) at 157. The fourth-ranked wrestler in Division II and a returning All-American (fourth place), Poster led by a 2-1 score after two periods over Arne, who is ranked as high as No. 8 in Division III.

Ryan Zumwalt took advantage of riding time and a takedown with 40 seconds remaining in the match to tally a 7-3 decision over senior Brandon Seppelt (Foley, Minn.). Taylor Lewandowski increased the Huskies' lead to 26-0 with a 15-4 major decision against freshman Teddy Erickson (Annandale, Minn.) at 174 pounds. The win clinched SCSU's new Division II record of 48 consecutive dual wins. Clayton Jennissen continued erased a 1-0 lead with five points late in the second period en route to a 6-2 win over sophomore Josh Willaert (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) at 184 pounds.

Chris Brassell registered a 4-1 win against junior Ryan Michaelis (Monticello, Minn.) at 197 pounds and Austin Goergen ended the dual with a pin in 6:22 over senior John Scepaniak (Avon, Minn./Holdingford). The matches were the first for Michaelis and Scepaniak this season due to football.

A LOOK AT THE POINTERS: Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2-2 overall) is currently ranked as high as No. 21 (NWCA) and boasts one nationally-ranked wrestler, sixth-ranked Dustin Wozniak at 197 pounds. Three others are listed as "Contenders," just outside the national top 10 by D3wrestle.com: Jared Kust (a transfer from St. Cloud State) at 141 pounds, Jamey Simmons at 157 and Jordan Koranda at heavyweight. The Pointers return six starters from a team that went 17-8 overall, good for third in the WIAC, and finished fourth at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Johnnies fell to UWSP by a 25-15 score last year.

A LOOK AT THE WARRIORS: Waldorf (0-2 overall) looks to bounce back from a 44-9 loss at Augsburg Nov. 26. The Auggies registered five pins and two major decisions in the first seven matches (125-174 pounds). A pair of Warriors were nationally-ranked in the NAIA preseason polls: Bo Bettinson (third in the North region and No. 7 nationally) at 125 pounds and Brock Binversie (second in the North region and No. 10 nationally) at 184.

A LOOK AT THE RAMS: Cornell (2-1 overall) returns eight wrestlers from its 2013 regional lineup, including a pair of NCAA qualifiers and one national finalist. An NCAA runner-up at 197 pounds a year ago, Alex Coolidge is ranked fourth (D3wrestle.com) and fifth (NWCA), respectively, while Trevor Engle is ranked ninth by both organizations at 149. Carl Gaul (heavyweight) and Brent Hamm (174 pounds) are listed as Contenders by D3wrestle.com. The Rams defeated SJU by a 23-19 score last season.
